With its comprehensive, holistic, child-focused approach, the Harbor's programs promote educational, emotional, social and physical well-being. Boys & Girls Harbor has been a leading edge innovator in all of our service areas:
* The Harbor's early childhood and after school services have used theme-based, cooperative and collaborative instruction since the early 1970s and have been cited as model programs by national, state and city organizations.
* The Harbor Science and Arts Charter School represents the Harbor's 25 years of involvement in New York City's education reform movement and the Harbor leadership in being among the first organizations to open a charter school in New York State.
* The Emily N. Carey Harbor School is a small independent high school started with an entering class in September 2005 and will add a new class in September 2006.
* The Harbor's Upward Bound college preparation programs are one of a handful of programs supported by the U.S. Department of Education not directly affiliated with a college. Students are from low-income households and the first generation in their families to go to college.
* The Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts has trained hundreds of performers, including several who have appeared in Broadway shows. The Conservatory has been awarded the Cultural Challenge Grant - Careers in the Arts by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
* The Harbor Literacy Center serves students and families from all Harbor programs with a research-based Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach to language-based instruction.
* The Harbor's behavioral health services are keenly focused on nurturing positive health choices by our students, strengthening the role of family and identifying appropriate interventions when needed.
